I was in the backyard with a heavy grocery bag full of shit…
Surely I’d gotten it all, right? Somehow double the dogs does not equal double the poop. Our foster puppies always seem to produce exponentially more waste matter. I scanned the grass, the dirt, searching for any missed droppings from my faithful Luna and her foster buddy, Truffle. I dutifully trudged to check behind some yucca trees and as I returned to the little grassy area I was shocked to see THREE MORE MASSIVE PILES OF CRAP! They were so obvious, how had I missed them? Well, I was looking from the back of the yard now, at a different angle.
Okay, Blaize, really, why are you writing about doggy doodoo?? Come on!
Well, it’s important! This moment reinforced a thought that has been coming through over and over this week.
Perspective is everything. And it’s not as either/or as it may seem.
What POV serves us in this moment?
I’m in an amazing cohort of somatic therapists and coaches who meet weekly for practice sessions, review of different techniques and mentorship of each other. This group means so much to me because a big part of my ethics as a healer is making sure to bring in not only continuing education, but also feedback on my work and ways to deepen the effectiveness of my practice.
Today we went over a method called socratic questioning from our Somatic Cognitive Behavioral Therapy program. This uses an almost interrogation-like approach to examine a belief or thought held by the client. Through questioning we are able to explore whether or not the thought or belief is helpful.
In my “practice session” (air quotes because it was a very real session, ha!), I dove into a deeply rooted fear around my own access to financial success in this post-sex-work chapter of my life.
One key part of socratic questioning is looking into what evidence you can find FOR or AGAINST the belief or thought you are examining.
As we questioned, I began to realize something. Potentially any version of the story we tell ourselves can be true. So it’s up to us to decide what is helpful to allow our brains to show us evidence FOR or AGAINST.
Our brains really want us to be correct. It’s proof of our very sanity. So when we tell ourselves something, our brains will scan our lives for the verification.
I could tell myself “This transition out of sex work is failing. I’ll never have the cash flow I once had. My greatest value is my sexuality. The business I have built is not as successful as the hustle I used to do.” And my brain will churn up facts to support these claims, to make sure I am right, sane, rational.
OR!!!! I could tell myself “My healing is exponential since I closed the chapter of sex work. I have SO much more to offer my clients now, in the work I am actually deeply passionate about and highly qualified in. My financial success is steadily growing, bit by bit. I am healing money trauma and transactional relating wounds with each passing day that I choose to stay in this new chapter. The business I am growing is sprouting up strong and true as I nurture it with my love, faith, consistency, and authenticity. The people I trust the most believe in me and are cheering me on because they see this is the best thing!”
And ya know what? My beautiful brain churned out just as many facts to support this narrative!!!
The exciting fact here is that it’s all up to us to decide what perspectives we’re going to nurture, and which ones are helpful at which given moments in our lives.
There could be something helpful in considering financial risk as an entrepreneur and single parent, for fuckin’ sure! But dwelling on those thoughts when there is evidence of my progress, probably not so helpful. And letting those thoughts catapult me back into my survival mode brain that says “better go back to sex work, you failure”, DEFINITELY not a perspective I’m letting in right now.
It’s helpful to explore our issues from different angles, and then decide which ones actually serve us.
It’s just like the dog poop. I could have just looked at my backyard from one POV and called it a day. But I’m glad I took a gander from the back.
‘Cause idk about you but I wanna clean all my shit out - of both my yard and my mind!
Creator Corner Collective
Here’s the part where I highlight another business, artist, creator! It felt appropriate to give a nod to another dog rescue. We’ve worked with Bark’N’Bitches a bunch to foster. There are SO MANY adoptable dogs in LA. If you can’t adopt, (or can’t adopt anymore since your household is FULL like mine haha) consider even short-term fostering. This can save lives and give these animals a chance to be adopted.
This handsome boy caught my eye on their Instagram last week.
